Digital Branding, The Avatar: Who do you serve?

Next up in our digital branding series is “The Avatar”. Derived from ancient Hinduism, “The Avatar” is our analogy referring to the “manifestation of characteristics of the ideal customer” for your products and services. That is, your customer profile or target audience – or the people that you're designing or selling your products/services to.

There’s no point trying to sell ice to an Inuit (although you could try to sell them refrigerators to keep their food warm) or designer clothes to a minimalist. Therefore, before you set out and spend a lifetime designing an intricate machine or chemical compound that that nobody in the world would know how to use or what to use for, ask yourself these questions and save yourself a little trouble:

  1. Who is most likely to need your expertise? Why?
  2. Where can you find him/her?
  3. What pains does your avatar want to get rid of?
  4. What challenges are they hoping to overcome?
  5. What solutions have they tried? Why didn’t it work for them?
